A Note From Our President

Hi Sewing Sisters,
It has been a while since the spring retreat ended and that was the last time I saw most of you. Hopefully you all are staying safe and finding ways to beat the cabin fever. I know many of you stepped up to help sew masks and scrub hats for the community. My poor sewing machine got a workout making masks during April and May. I made about a hundred before hitting “burnout” stage. Now that summer is in full swing, I’ve been giving the machine a break and spending more time in the garden.

Right now is when we are usually actively recruiting for fair volunteers. Due to the fair being canceled, we have more time to finish entries for next year!

At this time, the Anchorage Senior Activity Center is still closed for in-person activities. With the recent increase in COVID cases, there is no estimated re-opening date since their clients are vulnerable to the disease. Since most of our neighborhood group meetings are usually small groups (10 or less) with masks and spacing it’s possible we might be able to hold some fall meetings (most likely not at the senior center). Stay tuned for more information: we will evaluate if we are safely able to resume in-person meetings as we get closer to September. ASG National has also committed to holding National Neighborhood Group meetings via Zoom through the end of the year as an alternative to in-person neighborhood meetings. They recently held one with about 700 members attending across the country: unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend but plan to participate in the next one. These National neighborhood meetings increase our access to instructors from other chapters.

Kathy Lunning has been in contact with Pioneer Ridge B&B in regards to the Fall Retreat. They have reduced the minimum overnight participants to 10 and waived any penalties if we choose to cancel the Fall Retreat (we would still have our spot for Spring 2021). Due to shared rooms, bathrooms, and community style cooking, we understand there are some safety concerns with holding it this year. At this time, we still have the retreat scheduled and we make the final decision by the end of September.

They have reduced the minimum overnight participants to 10 and waived any penalties if we choose to cancel the Fall Retreat (we would still have our spot for Spring 2021).
