June 2018

A Note From Our President

Hello, Sewing Sisters

I cannot believe it is the middle of June already. I drafted a newsletter right after Easter, and then left on vacation with not much internet, and have been alerted by my fellow sewing sister that we are way behind. I guess that’s how it goes sometimes. No excuses, just own up and move on.

June means that school is out and schedules are a little more loose. The Fair is going to be here before we know it, and I am challenging each of you to make something and enter it! Get started now. Call a friend and make a sew date. Help a young person sew something they can enter. Entry dates are August 10 and 11. The Exhibitor Guide is available on the website, along with the Member area where there are many opportunities for helping with intake, judging, setup and take-down. The Sewing Department at the Alaska State Fair is our biggest project of the year, and your skills and participation are an important part of making it happen.

Emily Longbrake has been doing some magic with the new Alaska Sewlutions website at alaskasewlutions.org. If you haven’t visited, go take a look. She also presented a program for the last Valley neighborhood meeting and the video is available on the Facebook page. New and exciting, that’s us. I ran across this post that made me smile. It is long, but I have to confess that I can relate to most of these. I don’t know when my sewing machine’s birthday is, though. I guess I should go ask her!

I also discovered this handy hint at the same site: Use your smart phone to see the needle size

I hope your summer is full of family and memories and a little time for recreation and relaxation. Take some time to sew something, and please share your progress or questions or discoveries with the rest of us.

Love and best stitches,

Kathy Rockey

President, Alaska Sewlutions chapter of the American Sewing Guild
